Austin, TX – In response to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’s rollback of critical protections for student loan borrowers, Democratic candidate in Texas’ 10th Congressional District, Shannon Hutcheson, issued the following statement:
“The Department of Education’s new regulations are a plan to enrich for-profit colleges at the expense of defrauded student loan borrowers. This is yet another example of the Trump Administration, through one of its a mega wealthy cabinet members, turning its back on Texas families in favor of Washington corporate special interests.
The Obama Administration developed a comprehensive set of regulations that, among other things, helped working people who were defrauded by for-profit colleges. Under these regulations, student borrowers could apply to have their loans “discharged” or forgiven, in whole or in part, by the Department of Education. After Trump’s election, Secretary DeVos refused to implement these regulations to protect borrowers, despite being ordered to do so by a federal court. Instead, Secretary DeVos just changed the rules. And, to make matters worse, instead of going after these for-profit colleges for the fraud they have perpetrated, Secretary DeVos has consistently gone after the little guy.
I know because I have been on the front lines of this fight.
I represented a veteran of the U.S. Army who was scammed by a for-profit college in the early 1980’s. Thirty-six years later, Secretary DeVos filed suit against my client — just as she did against thousands of borrowers across the country — seeking a huge amount of money on a small student loan. So, I took on Secretary DeVos.
These new regulations were issued in direct response to legal claims like those I filed and those filed by others including the Harvard Project on Predatory Student Lending. Secretary DeVos, having fared poorly in courts across this county, is now attempting to cut off the ability of victims of fraud in higher education to seek justice.
Texans deserve a government that fights for working families, not one that sets up roadblocks to see them fail, and that’s why I’m going to be their fiercest advocate in Congress.
